  • Gordie Howe scored his 1,000th professional goal (NHL and WHA combined) on December 7, 1977.

  • Maurice Richard became the first NHL player to score 400 career goals on December 18, 1954.

  • Bobby Orr recorded his 800th career point on December 22, 1974.

  • Denis Potvin became the first defenseman in NHL history to record 700 assists on December 2, 1986.

  • Paul Coffey became the first NHL defenseman to reach 1,500 career points on December 23, 1999. 

Christmas Day Games

The NHL used to schedule games on Christmas Day, with the final games played on December 25, 1971. The New York Rangers had the best all-time record on this date. In one famous Christmas Day game in 1956, Gordie Howe had the best offensive game of his career, with three goals and three assists.
