Girls Drop Out of Sports at Twice the Rate of Boys
Here’s How We Change That

Girls Drop Out of Sports at Twice the Rate of Boys.
Here’s How We Change That.
For years, adults in sport have talked about girls “losing interest” as they get older. But the research tells a different story. The Women’s Sports Foundation says that by age 14, many girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys. In Canada, Canadian Women & Sport’s 2024 Rally Report found that more than 1 in 5 girls leave sport during adolescence, and nearly 4 in 10 girls are still missing out on sport altogether. At the same time, 4 in 10 girls say they are more interested than ever in being active and playing sports.
That matters because it changes the conversation. The issue is not whether girls care about sport. Many do. The issue is whether sport is being built in a way that works for them.
One major barrier is access. The Women’s Sports Foundation points to fewer playing opportunities, limited facilities, transportation issues, and rising costs as key reasons girls leave. When school-based options shrink, families are pushed toward private programs, extra travel, and added expenses that many cannot absorb. In other words, some girls are not walking away from sport—they are being priced or pushed out of it.
Another issue is the environment. Canadian Women & Sport says girls stay involved when sport is safe, supportive, and designed with their needs in mind. Their research also shows that comments about appearance, body image, and clothing can directly affect participation. That means retention is not just about practice times and registration forms. It is about culture. If a girl feels judged, unsafe, or out of place, talent alone will not keep her there.
Coaching also plays a huge role. Girl-centred coaching is not about lowering standards. It is about understanding what builds confidence, belonging, and long-term commitment. Positive feedback, clear communication, and an emphasis on development and enjoyment can have a powerful effect. Canadian Women & Sport specifically calls for girl-centred coaching practices and safe, supportive environments as part of the solution.
Role models matter too. Canadian Women & Sport found that half of the girls surveyed feel inspired by coaches and role models who represent their diverse backgrounds. When girls can see themselves in the people leading them, they are more likely to believe they belong in the game—and that they can stay in it.
So, how do we change the dropout trend? We make sport more affordable. We design better and safer programs. We coach girls with intention. We create environments where confidence can grow. And we stop blaming girls for leaving systems that were not built well enough to keep them.
Girls do not need less ambition. They need better conditions. If we build sports around what helps girls stay, more of them will.
