Today we celebrate the country that gave us frozen ponds, early-morning practices, packed rinks, backyard games, road trips, tournament weekends, and a love for hockey that runs from coast to coast. From small-town arenas to big-league dreams, hockey is woven into the fabric of Canada — teaching teamwork, toughness, pride, and community every time the puck drops.

Here’s to the players, parents, coaches, volunteers, and fans who keep the game alive and make Canadian hockey so special.

I am not quite as old as Canada, but I have seen the most revolutionary changes in Hockey with my 70th birthday just over 6 weeks

1956–1959 The Goalie mask begins changing Hockey. Jacques Plante helped usher in a new era when he wore facial protection during an NHL game in 1959. It changed Goalie safety forever.

1960s The curved stick becomes part of the modern game The curved blade helped change shooting, passing, puck control, and Goalie reactions. It made the puck harder to read and helped create a more offensive game.

1970s Helmet use becomes normal Player safety became more visible. The game was still rough, but equipment began to shift toward protection, not just toughness.

1980s The composite/improved goalie mask era grows Goalie protection shifted from basic masks to stronger helmet-cage designs, giving goalies more confidence and improved safety.

1990s Video replay enters the NHL The NHL adopted replay support for goal calls in 1991, helping officials review difficult goal decisions.

2000s Composite sticks become mainstream Lighter sticks changed release speed, shooting mechanics, one-timers, and how young players learned to shoot.

2010s Analytics changes how teams evaluate players Shot attempts, zone entries, expected goals, player usage, and possession data changed scouting, coaching, and roster decisions.

2020s Puck and Player tracking / NHL EDGE Tracking became fully operational in 2021–22, using Arena cameras and infrared emitters in pucks and jerseys to create new performance data.

Oh, and I have seen Four Leaf Cups - 1962-1964 and 1967; not sure if I will see number 5, but fingers crossed.
