Logan Thompson surprised 7-year-old Sutton Bullard on Friday to celebrate her bell-ringing ceremony, marking the end of her 800 days of chemotherapy. Thompson first met Sutton at the Capitals’ 2024 Hockey Fights Cancer skate and wanted to join her and her family at their local hospital to celebrate the big day. “I was really privileged to be invited by her and her family,” Thompson said. “It was a really touching moment—really emotional—and I’m just happy I was able to share it with Sutton.” The two have stayed in contact since meeting last year, a relationship that became a significant source of support as Sutton underwent treatment for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. “(The skate) started this wonderful relationship between the two of them,” said Sutton’s mother, Michelle Cullum. “Since then, they’ve kept in touch. He has signed autographed jerseys for all of the kids. She’s written him letters. “They’ve just maintained this relationship… Logan represented ‘Here’s a professional athlete who has taken an interest in her journey with cancer.’ That was a very special, powerful thing for her—to know that someone like him cared about what she was going through.” |

Hockey Fights Cancer

Hockey Fights Cancer was founded in 1998 as a joint initiative between the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA). This remarkable initiative has raised over $32 million since its inception and has been at the forefront of raising awareness and supporting those affected by cancer, touching the lives of millions.
For the past 26 years, the NHL and the NHLPA have united players, teams, coaches, broadcasters, caregivers, doctors, nurses, patients, survivors, and fans behind the powerful Hockey Fights Cancer initiative at both the national level through the NHL and NHLPA, and at the hyper-local level across the 32 NHL teams. Each season, every Team hosts its own Hockey Fights Cancer night and celebrates its Hockey/Cancer community locally, *****typically in November, during Hockey Fights Cancer month*****.
Funds raised through Hockey Fights Cancer, in partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS), support individuals affected by cancer, their families, and caregivers through ACS patient programs and support services. Some of the many ways include:
Lodging – American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® communities offer a home away from home for people facing cancer and their caregivers when cancer treatment is far away. Our 30+ Hope Lodge communities across the country offer a free place to stay during treatment, allowing people with cancer to focus on their recovery. Hope Lodge guests don’t just find a place to stay – they find a community of support and an emotional connection with others facing the same journey.
Transportation – The American Cancer Society Road To Recovery® program eases your burden by giving free rides to cancer-related medical appointments. Our trained volunteer drivers are happy to pick you up, take you to your appointment, and drop you off at home—all for free and all to make your days a little easier. Not having a ride shouldn’t stand between you and lifesaving treatment.
Round-the-Clock Support – Our 24/7 cancer helpline provides support for people dealing with cancer. We can connect you with trained cancer information specialists who will answer questions about a cancer diagnosis and provide guidance and a compassionate ear.
